Our clients are the dogs that we take care of. The humans at Challenge Accepted work intimately with our clients to provide care that is as unique and special as they are. At the very heart of everything we do is aimed at keeping dogs with families that love them and take care of them. Our business practices mitigate dogs being rehomed or surrendered to a shelter.

Challenge Accepted believes in sustainability in all aspects- resources, time, and energy and we will always do our best to put in place processes that support saving these three for our clients, ourselves, and our planet.

Our goal is to host those that are a good fit for the environment we have created. We attract pet parents who have or want to have strong bonds with their dogs and make Challenge Accepted a member of their dog’s family.

We work with dogs that may not fit the ideal standard for other dog day care and boarding centers, we like to think of them as the “underdogs”. And we’ll meet our clients where they are emotionally through compassion and common sense. We use training methods that are humane, and science based, taking advantage of a dog’s natural inclination to please as well as their drive and motivation to receive rewards for a job well done. We firmly believe that there are no bad dogs and that dogs should be treated at least as well as people.

All of this carries over to the way we treat our team members, customers, business partners, vendors, and the entire network of people that we encounter through our products and services. We purposely seek out new and progressive ideas and challenge the status quo by hiring humans that believe in our mission and cultivate our culture.

Mission Statement

Integrity, communication, diversity, community and compassion are the core values that outline our mission.

Challenge Accepted Dog Training is a dog day care, training, boarding and taxi service for dogs!

Heidi brought Kansas City’s first doula agency to the area. As the founding (former) owner of Kansas City Doulas for over 15 years, Heidi excelled in all aspects in the industry. She developed sustainable systems for both her employees and clients while cultivating the gentler side of working in the business. She was a highly requested companion for pregnant and birthing people in the Kansas City area, where she was known for both her kindness, compassion, and her take-charge attitude.

Today, Heidi uses her diverse set of skills as co-owner of Challenge Accepted Dog Training. She takes pride in her intuitive skills relating to not only people but also dogs. On any given day, you might find her managing spreadsheets in the office or swaddling an unsettled puppy while singing them to sleep. Financial management is where she excels, but she’s also great at getting her creative juices flowing as she writes the newsletter, Dog-Oh Tales and coordinates Challenge Accepted’s posts on social media platforms. Being around Heidi is sure to bring some laughs as she is supportive and uses her sense of humor and subtle goofiness to break up the extremely rewarding but sometimes intense and exhausting work with dogs.

Gardenia (G) grew up with her family raising various types of animals and has always had a passion for taking care of them. She developed a love and appreciation for all species as a young girl and took special interest in figuring out what she was capable of teaching and what each one was willing to learn. Her first “client” was a pet chicken at age six.

Since those early childhood days her career has had many twists and turns but always came back to her love of animals particularly dogs. She moved to Kansas City from Northern California where she immediately found work at the corporate level for one of the largest doggie daycare franchises in the country. In that capacity, Gardenia worked with franchisees setting up locations for the company all over the United States. In this role she also served as a consultant on safety and functionality of the building itself and she trained large groups of new employees to be ready for the opening day at the franchise locations. Gardenia eventually found herself in the position of Operations Manager at the local large capacity daycare and still to this day remains the sole supporting consultant and trainer for the local store.

Gardenia is more than an animal lover, she is the voice for the dogs at Challenge Accepted, where her motto is “dogs come first”. Her sincere warmth and kindness exude from her and into every aspect of Challenge Accepted all day. Whether she is training dogs and their humans, working with the pack, or spending time teaching Challenge Accepted Dog Wranglers, she does so with patience and compassion. Her clients rely on her calm presence and her common sense, down-to-Earth and non-judgmental approach to teaching.

G’s innate knowledge has been fine-tuned by her many years of experience and she understands the needs of each client at Challenge Accepted. Her huge heart led her to empathize with dogs that were misunderstood by most or dogs that did not do well in large group play atmospheres. And she has shaped Challenge Accepted to be a place where “free spirited” pups can feel at ease.

Her method is not forceful. She treats all the dogs with love and gentleness even as she is training them. She uses positive reinforcement, not force. And by providing a home-like environment on their urban farm, she ensures that all dogs, regardless of their individual quirks, feel comfortable.
